Prospectus
You are invited to participate in the 2024 AC/DPAA 3rd Annual “Paint the Desert” Festival and Desert Landscape Exhibition at the Artists Council at the Galen in Palm Desert, California. There are two separate thematic categories and opportunities to be selected for inclusion in the overall exhibition – thus, you have the potential of exhibiting one artwork in “Paint the Desert” Plein Air Festival Competition, and one or two artworks in the Desert Landscape Exhibition. The categories are:
1. “Paint the Desert” Plein Air Festival Exhibition: Not Juried, open to the first 75 participating artists, with monetary awards and prizes.
2. Desert Landscape Exhibition: Juried exhibition (approximately 100 paintings) and awards.
You must be a member of the Artists Council to apply for any of these categories.
(This requirement applies if your primary residence is within 125 miles of the Artists Council at the Galen in Palm Desert, California.)
If needed, you can join the Artists Council as part of your entry to these exhibitions.

TO ENTER:
Category 1: “Paint the Desert” Plein Air Festival & Exhibition DPAA’s 3rd Annual Plein Air Festival and exhibition of paintings created locally over a 4-day period, painted en plein air (paintings may be finished in studio) capturing the diverse landscape of the desert. Artwork to be created on artists choice of substrate (canvas, paper, board, at least 1.5” deep if unframed), stamped on the back with DPAA stamp, framed ready to hang, and submitted at Artists Council at the Galen on Wednesday, January 17th from 9am -11am for judging, exhibition, and sale.
Category 2: Desert Landscape: Paintings reflecting the desert landscape created in studio or en plein air. All styles considered including realistic, impressionism, and abstraction.
Entry Fees: (Note: Artist Council membership required if Primary Residence is within 125 miles.)

AC/DPAA SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. Artwork pricing: No limitation on pricing. Proceeds from the sale will be split 50-50 between the artist and the AC/DPAA. Artists desiring to submit a painting “NFS” will be considered on a limited basis. Contact Diane Moore for more information: desertpleinair@gmail.com.
2. A description of the work will be required for each piece you submit. Describe your artwork
carefully. Once a piece of work is submitted, NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE. (max. 600 characters).
3. Artwork Size: Desert Landscape: No limitation on size.
Artwork Size: “Paint the Desert”: No limitation on size.
Artwork on paper must be protected by glass or Plexiglass.
Artwork on canvas wrap or other materials must be finished on the edges.
Unframed artwork must be at least 1.5” deep.
Artwork must be ready for installation, securely wired for hanging.
No saw-tooth hangers, ceiling mounts, or moving parts may be used.
4. Artwork must be original in concept, design, execution and submitted by the artist/maker; created independently (i.e., not under direct supervision of an instructor); not commercially manufactured or reproduced or incorporating any item that uses commercially available molds or patterns; not previously exhibited at any Artists Council exhibition.
5. “Paint the Desert”: Paintings must be on visible stamped substrate. Paintings to be entered into the competition to be framed where stamp is not visible, please get approval before framing.

Best of Show - $500
First Place - $250
Second Place - $150
Third Place - $100
Honorable Mention: 4 Honorable Mention Awards
7. Artwork must remain at the Artists Council at the Galen during the entire exhibition, Thurs, Jan 18, 2024, through Sun, Feb 4, 2024. Once accepted into the exhibition, artwork may not be withdrawn or substituted. If artwork is sold, and buyer requests taking painting before Feb 4, 2024, this will be allowed (artwork’s name tag remains with red dot).
8. Accepted artwork must be reserved by the artist and not physically shown elsewhere; the price for artwork shown by the artist on-line must match the exhibition sale price.
9. Artists accepted to the show will be responsible for one 3-hour volunteer Gallery Host shift, if residing within 60 miles, at the Artists Council at the Galen during the run of the exhibition. Gallery Host sign-up Schedule will be available on Artists Council’s website.
10. All selections are final. Selections for the Artists Council Exhibition are final and at the jurors’ discretion.
ART DELIVERY AND PICK UP
1. Delivery of accepted art: Wed, Jan 17, 2024, from 9-11 am, at the Artists Council at the Galen, 72567 Highway 111, Palm Desert, California 92260. Artwork must be delivered by the artist or his/her agent (you may ask a friend or family member). Artwork shipped to the Artists Council will not be accepted. The Artists Council cannot provide special handling for artwork.
2. Sold and unsold art must be picked up at the Artists Council at the Galen on Sun, Feb 4, 2024, from 2-4 pm, by the buyer, the artist, or his/her agent.
LIABILITY
By submitting artwork to the AC/DPAA Plein Air Festival, you must agree to our liability waiver. You can read the liability waiver by clicking on the entry form link above.
TECHNICAL HELP FOR ARTISTS
For any artists who feel they may have difficulty in submitting on their computer, the Artists Council is scheduling one Zoom help session on Dec 27, 2023, at 10 am. We'll cover technical entry issues and membership issues only. If you are interested, please join us at:

If you have any concerns about your ability to complete the online entry form, we encourage you to enter before December 15th to allow time for you to get technical help. We cannot extend the deadline for anyone who waits until the last days to enter and then runs into technical problems.

The Desert Plein Air Association is proud to announce the 3rd Annual “Paint the Desert” Festival is now open for Registration. Our previous Festivals have been a big success, and we are happy to build on it by offering an expanded exhibition of 3 weeks. Workshop opportunities for artists to be announced this Fall. The 2024 “Paint the Desert” Festival will be presented at the premier museum-quality galleries of the Artists Council at the Galen in Palm Desert.
If you live within 125 miles of Palm Desert, you must be an Artists Council member (Artists Council annual dues is $75.00) to enter “Paint the Desert” or the concurrent Desert Landscape exhibition. The Desert Landscape exhibition is a juried exhibition; however, “Paint the Desert” is open to the first 75 registrations and not juried. If you are a DPAA member and register before 11/1/23, we will reduce your entry fee by $15 (to $30) and credit you with a $60 one-year membership in DPAA, for a total savings of $75.00. So please sign up now.
For DPAA members, by also becoming a member of Artists Council you will benefit as follows:
Artists Council has 10 exhibitions a year:
7 exhibitions are open to the first 100 entries
3 exhibitions are juried shows
Workshops and classes are discounted for AC members.
They have a successful critique group meeting once a month.
The Store is now open for members to offer high-quality, unique, handmade art.
The 2024 Festival workshops will be conducted by professional instructors in various mediums including oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, and sketching. These workshops are currently being developed and will be announced this Fall. Signing up for these workshops will be on our website.

ELIGIBILITY
Participation in this Plein Air is open to all artists. Registration is required. You must register separately for Workshops.

CHECK-IN AND STAMPING (Saturday, January 13th) - no early stamping:
Check-in for the Festival, stamping of substrates for Festival competition. Substrate stamping … for dark-colored materials, please paint a white patch to provide a legible stamping area.
MATERIALS
All paintings must be either framed or gallery wrap (1 ½” depth minimum allowed). Media may include oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, gouache, inks, charcoal, and/or pencils. No digital art allowed.

FRAMING
No limitation on outside framed size or canvas.
Artwork on paper must be protected by glass or Plexiglass.
Artwork on canvas gallery wrap, cradleboard, or other materials must be finished on the edges.

PLEIN AIR GUIDELINES
A majority of each artwork should be created on-site in the true spirit of plein air. Minor adjustments or corrections may be done in a studio to fix forms or colors.
ARTWORK DELIVERY FOR FESTIVAL COMPETITION
Wednesday, January 17th, 9-11 am Check-in… stamp must be visible on the back of each piece of art. Paintings that will have a backing covering substrate stamp: please reveal to DPAA staff prior to framing.
Artwork must be signed, appropriately framed, mounted and securely wired for hanging.
DPAA reserves the right to refuse any improperly framed pieces, wrapped canvases, stained mats, alligator-type hangers, or those with wet paint on the edges.
PRICING
All artworks will be sold at prices selected by the artist.
Price changes will not be allowed after artwork submission.
Artwork may be listed “Not for Sale”.
ARTIST AWARDS JUDGING
Judging for “Paint the Desert” artworks will take place prior to Saturday’s Reception at The Galen: Awards Reception Saturday, January 20th, 2024: Time: 2pm
Judge: Steven Biller, Editorial Director of Desert Publications Inc., producers of Palm Springs Life Magazine.

ARTWORK PICKUP
All plein air art will be displayed in The Galen Gallery until 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 4th. All unsold artworks must be picked up by the artist or a designated agent on Sunday, February 4th, 2pm-4:00 pm. Any other pick-up arrangements must be approved by DPAA festival management.
LIABILITY
Release of Liability Form to be signed with Registration.
By submitting artwork to the “Paint the Desert” Exhibition and Sale, the individual artist acknowledges and agrees that he/she:

Has read and agrees to all conditions of entry.

Releases the rights for use of images of his/her artwork in any Artists Council or Desert Plein Air Association’s promotional and marketing materials.

Is responsible for insurance for his/her artwork. Neither the Artists Council nor its officers, directors, staff, or volunteers, nor anyone connected with the Artists Council, Desert Plein Air Association or this exhibition will be responsible for theft of, loss of, or damage to artwork, however caused.
